An earnings beat is a comparison against an estimate. It is not a complete assessment of business performance. Start by asking where the growth came from and whether it can continue.
Look at operating margins, cash generation and the bridge between reported and adjusted earnings. A headline improvement deserves more scrutiny when it depends on adjustments or one time benefits.
Then compare management’s outlook with what the market appeared to expect before the release. The reaction can be driven by the future rather than the quarter just reported. Record both the business results and the assumptions embedded in your own thesis.
